About Me

Hi, I’m Trystan!
Recipe Creator | Food Photographer | Mom of Two | Real-Life Home Cook
Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here.
Heaton Homemaker actually started as a plant-based food blog. I loved learning how to cook with more whole foods, beans, lentils, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables—and I still do.
But somewhere along the way, I realized that eating fully plant-based wasn’t working very well for me. I found out I couldn’t tolerate soy or plant-based protein powders, and I was having a hard time getting enough protein without them.
So, I took everything I learned from the plant-based community and simply added back in the protein my body needed.
The result is someone who still uses lots of plant-based techniques. But these days, I’d describe the way I eat as plant-forward.
I still try to eat a wide variety of plants, get plenty of fiber and protein, keep saturated fat relatively low, and choose wholesome ingredients most of the time. You’ll still find plenty of plant-based recipes and techniques around here, but you’ll also find recipes that use chicken, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and other foods that work well for my family.
Heaton Homemaker isn’t just about food.
I’m a mom of two, a wife, a food photographer, a recipe developer, and a proud steward of an ADHD brain that has collected approximately 47 hobbies—most of which I pursued just long enough to understand the basics before moving on to something else that caught me attention.
The upside is that I know a little bit about a lot of things, and I thrive in creativity!
Homemaking has proven to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. There are so many moving pieces that are often mundane—meals, laundry, cleaning, organizing, decluttering, schedules, groceries, and approximately 900 tiny things you’re somehow supposed to remember at all times.
My executive function was not built for all of that boring stuff.
But my brain is really good at creativity, problem solving, and asking, “Okay…but is there an easier or more fun way to do this?”
And that has turned out to be a pretty big blessing.
It means my kids get a mom who loves making ordinary life exciting. It means I’m constantly experimenting with systems, shortcuts, traditions, recipes, and routines that make our home work a little better. And when the “normal” way of doing something doesn’t work for me, I’m pretty willing to make up my own way instead.
That’s really what Heaton Homemaker has become.
It’s the lifestyle of a mom who genuinely struggles with some parts of homemaking—but cares deeply about her home and family, and keeps finding creative ways to make it work.
On the blog, you’ll find:
- Lots of whole-food, high-fiber recipes (with a sprinkle of treats made with real sugar)
- Lifestyle hacks to help make homemaking easier
- Tips to save time, money & mental load
- Meaningful ways to help you find joy in the mundane day to day (Hello Luke 2:52 challenge!)
I don’t have homemaking figured out.
But I care a lot about creating a home where my family is nourished—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And I’m learning how to not expect perfection from myself. Sometimes homemaking just requires creativity, a willingness to try again, and a really good backup freezer meal for the nights that have the energy to cook.
If you’re figuring it out as you go too, you’re in good company. Let’s make meals that nourish your family and fit your lifestyle — one delicious bite at a time.
